Every time the issue of female genital mutilation gets brought up in class, people tend to gravitate towards (what I believe to be the cop-out stance) of “we shouldn’t interfere with other cultures.”
To which I say, Excuse me? Since when has the Western World NOT meddled in the cultures and traditions of other places. Except our entire history of interference is fundamentally based on imperialistic motives; this isn’t charity, this isn’t cultural domination or suppression — this should be one of the first steps in a systematic take-down of the pillars of violence against women. FGM, domestic violence, rape culture, human trafficking: these are all violations of human rights. And human rights always trump the “sanctity” of tradition.
andreaisace:

“Every year, two million girls suffer the pain of genital mutiliation—a clear violation of their human rights. No government should continue to ignore this crime.”

oop, not a gaming post :x BUT this is something i feel very strongly about. the worldwide control over the sexuality of women is disturbing enough, but female genital mutilation takes it to the next level of the utterly horrific. i hope that in my lifetime, it will become a thing of the past.
